Puss in Bed is an independent, non-profit online library of zines and printed matter based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Built through a network of contributing shelves, collections, libraries, and independent spaces, the archive preserves and shares self-published print culture through high-resolution digital copies.

It's a wordplay on pustaka, which means library in Bahasa Indonesia, and the many cats that roam Bedeng Akademi Subkultur, the shared house where this project began.

Many of the publications in the archive come from Indonesia because that's where we're based. But the archive is not limited by national borders.

We hope to keep growing the shelves beyond the archipelago, one publication at a time.

Publications come from a growing network of contributing shelves, collections, libraries, and independent spaces.

Most of our initial collection comes from Indisczine Partij, a now-disbanded zine and publishing study collective in Indonesia. Since then, the archive has continued to grow through the generosity of friends, collaborators, collectors, and readers.

Through the From the Shelf of... network, we acknowledge where publications come from and the people who have cared for them over time.

Because many printed publications are difficult to access, easy to lose, and often exist in very small numbers.

Digital publications already have their place in the world. We truly appreciate digital zines too, but since they already exist in reproducible formats (and are usually hosted by the creators themselves), they don’t need us in the same way.

The publications belong to their respective creators and publishers.

Puss in Bed does not claim ownership over the works it digitizes. We preserve and share digital copies while acknowledging the shelves, collections, and spaces from which they come through the From the Shelf of... network.

Each publication is scanned manually, page by page, using flatbed scanners.

The files are then adjusted, assembled, catalogued, uploaded, and linked to the archive. Whenever possible, we also research the publication and reach out to its creators or publishers.

We try to preserve the look and feel of the original print while making it accessible as a digital copy.

All publications are hosted on Internet Archive and accessible through this website.

You can adjust the reading mode to suit your device, whether it's single-page scrolling on your phone or a two-page spread that feels closer to the original publication on desktop.

We use Internet Archive as the archive's storage infrastructure, while pussinbed.com serves as the main access and presentation layer.

Internet Archive has a long history of preserving and providing public access to digital materials. By hosting files there, we can focus on building the library while relying on an established platform dedicated to long-term preservation and access.

You can contribute your own publications, scans, collections, or shelves. The submission system is still evolving, but we're always open to conversations.

We actively contact creators, publishers, and contributors when we can find them. We also respect requests regarding access, attribution, and removal.

We're not anonymous. We don't try to be secretive, nor do we want to be in the spotlight.

Puss in Bed is maintained by a very small group of people who care about zines, archives, and keeping publications in circulation.

We're probably only one or two high-fives away from you.

Access to a publication does not necessarily mean permission to reproduce, redistribute, sell, or create works from it.

Puss in Bed does not own the rights to most publications in the archive, so we cannot grant permission on behalf of creators or publishers.

If you'd like to do something beyond personal reading or research, we encourage you to contact the creator or publisher whenever possible!

Puss in Bed exists because of trust. If a creator has concerns about how their work is shared, we'd much rather have a conversation than an argument.

We are not anonymous, nor are we particularly interested in the spotlight.
